Centering Latinx Clients and Cultural Humility in Counseling

As counselors, we are ethically responsible for providing culturally aware and culturally sensitive care to our clients. This means going beyond surface-level appreciations of culture to truly understand how a client’s cultural identity, values, and experiences shape their worldview and presenting concerns.

When working with Latinx clients, counselors must recognize how factors like language, familismo (commitment to family), personalismo (trusting and caring personal interactions), spirituality, gender roles, and experiences with discrimination impact the mental health and well-being of clients. We cannot assume that all Latinx clients share the same cultural norms or perspectives. There is rich diversity within Latinx cultures that manifests uniquely from person to person.

As such, counselors hoping to effectively support Latinx clients must make cultural humility a cornerstone of their practice. This means not assuming expertise in our client’s culture but instead taking an active, curious, lifelong orientation toward learning about other cultures and examining their own internal biases and privileges that impact the therapeutic relationship.

Some ways counselors can honor cultural humility with Latinx clients include:

  • Creating space for open cultural conversations through modeling, role play, journaling prompts, and providing psychoeducation where relevant

  • Exploring the client’s cultural identity and what it means to them, how it influences their worldview, and their presenting concerns

  • Discussing cultural traditions and norms around gender/family roles, making sure not to impose your values

  • Validating experiences with discrimination, racial oppression, and microaggressions through curiosity and belief in the client’s story

  • Being aware of both verbal and non-verbal communication patterns influenced by culture, and not attempting to change clients to match your communication patterns

  • Helping connect clients to the community and additional resources geared towards culturally relevant care

  • Seeking supervision/training to expand cultural awareness and confront internal biases impacting the ability to effectively counsel Latinx clients

The Latinx population faces immense challenges around education, poverty, health disparities, discrimination, and intergenerational trauma. Counselors have an opportunity to facilitate healing if we ground our work in cultural humility, continually self-reflect on our clinical skills serving marginalized populations, and amplify the voices of the Latinx clients with whom we work. This strengthens the counselor-client relationship, and moves us toward implementing cultural humility into more equitable, compassionate clinical practice.
